Life Coaching FAQs

What is a life coach? What does a life coach do?

A life coach is a wellness professional who supports clients as they work toward their goals. Together, the coach and client may focus on improving areas such as career, self-care, relationships, or anything else impacting the client’s daily well-being. Life coaches help individuals clarify their goals, identify obstacles, and create strategies for overcoming challenges. By leveraging clients’ unique skills and gifts, life coaches provide the support needed to achieve impactful change. People often seek life coaches during significant life changes or simply to build a happier, more meaningful life. There are various types of life coaches, including those specializing in areas like addiction, business, dating, health, and more. Unlike therapists, life coaches do not treat mental health conditions but focus on personal growth and empowerment.

What’s the difference between a life coach and a therapist?

While therapists analyze a client’s past to help them understand their current behavior, life coaches identify obstacles that stop a client from achieving their goals and present strategies for getting past these obstacles.

What is the difference between coaching and counseling?

Like the difference between a life coach and a therapist, coaching is different than counseling because it focuses on goal setting, not mental health. Ultimately, both practices aim to help the client on a deeply personal level but take different approaches in doing so.

What are the requirements to become a life coach?

The field of life coaching is growing quickly. Still, it is not currently regulated by any state or federal organization—meaning there are not currently any licensing requirements to enter the field. Anyone who wants to be a life coach can pursue the profession, but a life coach certification will show others that you have specific professional training and are serious about your career and coaching abilities.
