Complete an Entire Year of Foreign-Language Studies in Just Five Weeks with Summer Intensive Language Courses
Immerse yourself in one of these critical languages– Arabic, Chinese, or Portuguese. With SDSU’s Summer Intensive Language Courses, you can earn 3-20 units of foreign language credit this summer. Each intensive language and culture studies class meets for four to six hours of interactive instruction daily.

About the Classes
Arabic courses are 4 units each. Chinese courses are offered for 5 units. Portuguese 203/204 are 3 units each. Tuition is $300 per unit.
Take a two-course sequence (e.g., Arabic101/102, 201/202) to earn eight units in under six weeks, or take an individual course to earn four to five units in under three weeks.

Courses
Introduction to Arabic, with emphasis on language of everyday conversation. Focus on vocabulary and structures needed for elementary speaking, listening, and reading.
Continuation of Arabic 101. Develops vocabulary and structures needed for elementary speaking, listening, and reading, with emphasis on the language of everyday conversation.

Further development of speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills, with emphasis on the language of everyday conversation.

Further development of speaking, listening, and reading skills, with emphasis on the language of everyday conversation.

Rudiments of Mandarin pronunciation; listening, speaking, reading, and writing with emphasis on communicative ability; acquisition of the most useful phrases and vocabulary items, and over 300 characters; familiarity with basic sentence structures of Mandarin; information on Chinese culture. Continuation of Chinese 101, including acquisition of an additional 300 characters. Further development of language competence.
Development of facility to comprehend and produce spoken Chinese. Acquisition of advanced language structures and an additional 400 characters. Emphasis on connected discourse. See Class Schedule for appropriate section based on your background in Chinese.
Continuation of Chinese 201. Reading of contemporary work and writing of short passages in Chinese. Acquisition of an additional 400 characters. See Class Schedule for appropriate section based on your background in Chinese.
Pronunciation, oral practice, reading on Luso-Brazilian culture and civilization, essentials of grammar. Not open to students with credit in Portuguese 301 or higher-numbered Portuguese course.
Prerequisites: Three years of high school Romance language or two semesters of college Romance language.

Continuation of Portuguese 101. Practices of grammar, listening, reading, speaking, and writing. Adoption of a communicative approach to develop intermediate-low level skills in Portuguese. Not open to students.

Continuation of first-year Portuguese. Practices of grammar, listening, reading, speaking, and writing. Adoption of a communicative approach to develop intermediate-mid level skills in Portuguese. Not open to students with credit in Portuguese 204 or a higher-numbered Portuguese course.
Format: In Person
Continuation of second-year Portuguese. Practices of grammar, listening, reading, speaking, and writing. Adoption of a communicative approach to develop intermediate-high level skills in Portuguese. Not open to students with credit in Portuguese 311 or a higher-numbered Portuguese course.
Prerequisites: Portuguese 203 or completion of the fourth year of high school Portuguese.
Format: In Person
Historical, cultural socioeconomic, ethnic, geographic, and political factors of modern Brazil and Portugal.
Prerequisites: Portuguese 204
Format: In Person
An on-line Independent Studies course leading upper division Portuguese students in a research project and advanced conversation topics / practice.

Important movements, authors, and works of the literature of Brazil from the colonial period to modern times.

Once you’ve chosen your courses, click the Enroll button below to begin the registration process. Please indicate on the form that you’d like to register for courses.
Once you’ve filled out the Enrollment form, you’ll receive a confirmation email from SDSU Global Campus within 2-3 business days with the next steps to complete your enrollment.
Once registration opens for your courses, you can register in the my.SDSU portal.
