Frequently Asked Questions

What is the maximum time I have to complete my certificate?

Recency and Time-to-Completion Policy
Students may register in and complete individual courses at their own pace; however, all certificate requirements must be completed within five (5) years.

The five-year completion period begins on the date of the student’s first course registration in the certificate program. Coursework completed outside of this five-year window may not be applied toward certificate requirements.

*Time-limited access programs must be completed within the access period purchased. Extensions may be available in limited circumstances and are subject to program

approval.

Suggested Completion Timeframe
To maintain workforce relevance and alignment with current industry standards, the suggested average completion timeframe for a professional development certificate is two (2) years or less.

Students are strongly encouraged to complete all coursework within this timeframe whenever possible, as extended completion timelines may impact the currency and applicability of the acquired skills. This suggested timeframe is advisory in nature and does not affect eligibility for certificate completion, provided all requirements are met within the five-year maximum completion period.

Petition for Exception to Recency Determination
Students may submit a written petition requesting reconsideration of a course recency determination.

Petitions must:
1. Clearly describe the basis for the request
2. Identification of the specific coursework for which an exception is sought
3. How that coursework supports completion of certificate requirements
Written petitions must be submitted cert.successadvising.global@sdsu.edu. Petitions are reviewed on a case-by-case basis, and decisions are final. Any coursework approved for use outside of the five-year limitation must be completed at the next available course offering.
