Admission Requirements

Below is a list of general admission requirements for the M.S. in Big Data Analytics program.

We understand that every student’s academic journey is unique, and we encourage you to contact one of our Student Service Representatives to find out what you’ll need to successfully apply to the program.

In order to successfully apply to the program, you should have:

  • Relevant background (including previous coursework) in business, mathematics, computer science, geographic information systems, digital humanities or related fields.
  • Basic knowledge in computer science/programming, as demonstrated by a grade of C or better in CS 150: Introductory Computer Programming or equivalent course, or work experience.
  • Basic knowledge in statistical data analysis, as demonstrated by a grade of C or better in STAT 119 or equivalent course, or work experience.

You should also meet all the minimum SDSU requirements, at the time of enrollment:

  • Hold an acceptable baccalaureate degree earned at an institution accredited by a regional accrediting association, or have completed equivalent academic preparation as determined by the graduate dean
  • Have attained a grade point average of at least 2.85 in an acceptable earned baccalaureate degree, or at least 2.85 in the last 60 semester (90 quarter) units attempted, or hold an acceptable post-baccalaureate degree earned at an institution accredited by a regional accrediting association
  • Have been in good standing at the last institution attended

Please note that the online M.S. in Big Data Analytics program offered through SDSU Global Campus does not require GRE or GMAT scores for admission.

Application Instructions

To apply for the online Master of Science in Big Data Analytics program, you’ll need to complete the following steps:

  1. Complete the Cal State Apply Application
    • Submit an application to the University via Cal State Apply, along with the $70 nonrefundable application fee.
  2. Complete the Program Application and submit all supplemental documents via Slate by May 10, 2026.
    • ​​Within 72 hours of submitting your initial application to Cal State Apply, you will receive an email with a personalized link to Slate to complete your application to the program by submitting the following documents:
      • Save this email and use the link to revisit your application. 
      • Your application will be listed based on your Cal State Apply program selection. 
      • Click on the Application link. 
      • Click Open Application.
        • Complete all required questions and upload the following required documents to the program application:
          • One page statement of research interests and professional goals (maximum 500 words).
          • A current résumé or vitae. Please include undergraduate GPA scores (and if applicable, TOEFL or IELTS) test scores in your resume or vitae. Please also include information about your computer programming skills (Python, R, JavaScripts, C++/ Algorithms, AWS, MongoDB, etc.) and experience (beginner, medium, advanced, etc.). In addition, what knowledge, skills, job-related traits and abilities you may have?
          • One or two letters of recommendation (Minimum one letter is required)
          • One digital portfolio document that describes the technical products YOU have created, such as class projects, GitHub websites, videos, personal or project websites, dashboards, software development, programming profile, web designing, and apps. Note: A digital portfolio is not a résumé or an autobiography: only focus on your work samples. Only include your best, most professional examples. Include recent work if possible.
          • Copies of transcripts from all colleges and universities attended. These do not need to be sent directly from the college or university – scanned photocopies and digital copies are acceptable. Note: This is in addition to the transcripts that you submit to Graduate Admissions.
          • Copies of English language scores (TOEFL, IELTS, or PTE) if they are required in your applications. Photocopies and digital copies are acceptable. Note: This is in addition to the scores that you submit to Graduate Admissions.
  3. Submit official academic records to SDSU Graduate Admissions
    • After you have submitted the Cal State Apply application and received your RedID number, you will need to send official transcripts to the Graduate Admissions Office. Sending transcripts before submitting the Cal State Apply application will result in processing delays. You’ll need to provide the following:
      • Official transcripts (in sealed envelopes) issued within the last year, from all U.S. colleges and universities attended. Students who previously attended SDSU need only submit transcripts for coursework completed since last attendance. Hard copy SDSU transcripts are not required.
    • If you have international coursework, you’ll need to submit both the official transcript and proof of degree. If documents are in a language other than English, they should be accompanied by a certified literal English translation.
      • English language scores (TOEFL, IELTS, or PTE) are required of applicants, regardless of citizenship, whose native language is not English and whose preparatory education was principally in a language other than English. A minimum TOEFL score of 80 is required. Scores should be sent directly from ETS using SDSU’s Institution Code 4682.  Applicants may also take the IELTS in lieu of the TOEFL and should present a minimum score of 6.5. Applicants may also take the PTE in lieu of the TOEFL and should present a minimum score of 58.

After submitting the online Cal State Apply application, you will receive an email from San Diego State University that includes your SDSUid, which is needed to log into my.SDSU. You can use my.SDSU to check your application status, update your contact information, access your financial aid, and more. Please check back frequently to make sure all of the required materials have been received — you’re responsible for ensuring that all supporting materials are submitted by the deadline.

Financial Aid

Important Note: Courses taken before acceptance are not eligible for financial aid. Once you are accepted or matriculated, the courses are financial aid eligible.

This program is approved for financial aid. To begin the financial aid process, visit the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships website. There, you’ll be able to access the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

Admission and General FAQs

How many intakes are there for the Program?

SDSU allows only Fall intake in August.

What documents are required to be submitted for admission?

A color scan of the below-mentioned original document is required to be uploaded on the admission portal at the time of seeking admission:

  • Transcript of all the semesters of bachelor’s degree coursework
  • Degree Certificate / Provisional Degree Certificate
  • If the language of instruction in the undergraduate degree program is not English, then a score of English Proficiency Test is required.
What is the minimum Grade Point Average (GPA) required to be eligible to apply for the program?

You must have a minimum GPA of 3.0 on a scale of 4.0.

Is it required to take the English Language Test (IELTS)?

If the language of instruction in the undergraduate degree program is English, then no language proficiency test scores are needed.

Is it required to appear for the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) test?

No. The GRE Score requirement has been waived.

Is a student currently pursuing the final year of an undergraduate program eligible to apply?

Yes. The GPA from the previously completed semester will be taken into consideration and a conditional offer of admission will be made.

Is the Program recognized, approved, and accredited?

Yes. The Program is accredited by the Chancellor’s Office of the California State University and further by The Accrediting Commission for Schools, Western Association of Schools and College (ACS WASC).

Is the Degree acquired through the GlobalFlex program equivalent to the SDSU campus mode of learning?

Yes. If you enroll in the GlobalFlex program, you will be awarded the same degree certificate as the students pursuing the same in-person program on the SDSU campus.

What is the duration of the program?

The minimum duration of the program is three semesters.

How long does it take for a prospective student to get confirmation of admission after applying?

Usually, it takes between 8 to 12 weeks to get an admission decision. However, students applying to the GlobalFlex program are assured of admission if they satisfy the minimum eligibility requirements and have the entire application process completed within about 2 weeks from completing the entire admission package.

How many years of Optional Practical Training (OPT) is applicable after completion of the Program?

Since this is a STEM Program, students can apply to receive up to 36 months of OPT employment authorization.

What support does the University provide to commence the OPT?

The office of Career Services will assist students with resume preparation, interview skills, and networking opportunities, besides identifying job openings. The International Student Center (ISC) at SDSU will assist the students with filing the OPT.

Is it possible to work part-time in the USA while pursuing the program?

Yes. A student is permitted to work part-time for up to 20 hours per week on campus. The student is also eligible for summer internships off-campus for 40 hours per week.

Will a student be provided assistance while applying for F-1 visa?

The process for applying for visa commences immediately after the student has accepted the admission offer. All possible assistance will be extended to students for Form I-20. The International Student Center (ISC) will assist students with this process.

Is there a facility to identify and book SDSU-identified student accommodation?

Yes. SDSU will assist and connect the student with the local representative to identify suitable student accommodation as per budget.

What is the applicable tuition fee for the program?

The tuition fee is $911 US per credit. Please contact the admission counselor for more details regarding fees and installments.

Does the GlobalFlex program provide any scholarships?

Yes. Deserving students have an opportunity to earn scholarships between 20% to 40% of the total tuition cost of the program. The scholarship criteria is strictly merit-based and will take into consideration the student’s undergraduate GPA, the kind of coursework completed in the undergraduate programs, and any research project or publication that the student may have completed.  For additional information on financial loans, please consult our Paying for College Tuition page.

Academic FAQs

How many learning hours are involved?

A 3-credit course over a 16-week semester requires approximately 9 hours of work in some combination of class instructional time and independent study time.

How many teaching hours (Faculty driven) will there be per course?

Each 3-credit course will have approximately 45 hours worth of lecture content.

In which semester do elective courses commence?

In the second semester.

When should the choice of elective courses be indicated?

The choice of courses is to be indicated before the commencement of the corresponding semester. Visa rules require that you be enrolled in a minimum of 9 credits (or units) which is equal to 3 courses for this program (since each course is worth 3 credits) in each semester.

Can the electives be changed after commencement of the semester?

Yes, electives can be changed with the approval of the Faculty Director and Advisor, given that the course has seats available.

What is a Learning Management System (LMS)?

It is a platform (software) through which program delivery and administration is managed. The learner will be provided with a login ID and password to access the LMS. The LMS will provide the learner with access to study material, recordings of live sessions, pre-recorded videos, discussion, and chat facilities to interact with the faculty and clear doubts. The LMS will also contain information about class schedule, course information, and other announcements.

Where are the course matrix and syllabus available?

Both the matrix and syllabus are available on the LMS and the catalog on the program website.

How do I know about various due dates?

Will the recording of live sessions be available?

Yes. All live online sessions will be recorded and available on the LMS.

Will study material be provided?

Yes. A learner is provided access to an exhaustive and customized Self Learning Material (SLM) on the LMS.

What are the assessment components?

The assessment in courses may be comprised of quizzes, coding assignments, reading assignments, mid-term assessments, and final examinations. The faculty will indicate the specifics at the commencement of the course.

Will a laptop be required while pursuing the program?

Yes. A laptop computer with a working webcam & microphone facility is required.
