About the Program

The Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering Online Degree Completion Program at SDSU is a hybrid undergraduate program designed for students who have completed at least 60 transferable units and want to finish their degree.

The program prepares students to work in computer engineering jobs through a mix of online courses and an in-person engineering lab residency. Courses are taught by the same expert faculty who lead SDSU’s on-campus computer engineering department, ensuring a rigorous and research-driven education in a flexible, mostly online format.

What Will I Learn?

The computer engineering degree completion program gives students a solid foundation of advanced math, computer hardware and software, and engineering design. Along with these core subjects, computer engineering students are also required to take specialized courses in Very Large Scale Integration (VLSI) circuits, machine learning, web programming, etc. 

All courses in this program are conducted online and in an asynchronous format for total flexibility. For additional experience that’s more hands-on, this program also includes an in-person lab residency. 

This lab course, EE 330L, will be taken in the summer term after your first year of the program. It’s an accelerated 2-week course that will be conducted on-campus in sunny San Diego. This immersive experience gives you the opportunity to build electronic circuits, work with oscilloscopes, design a power system, and learn about lab instruments.

Admission Requirements

Below is a list of general admission requirements for the B.S. in Computer Engineering degree completion program.

We understand that every student’s journey is unique, and we encourage you to contact one of our Admission Advisors to confirm that you meet the program’s admission requirements.

Each applicant shall have completed the minimum transfer admission requirements by the end of the term prior to transfer. These include:

  • Complete 60 or more semester units (90 or more quarter units). 
  • The “Golden Four” Requirement, which includes:
    • Oral Communication — complete a basic public speaking course or other communication course with a grade of “C-” or higher in at least 3 semester (or 4 quarter) units
    • English Composition — complete, with a grade of “C-” or higher, a first-year composition course that emphasizes essay writing or reading and writing concurrently in at least 3 semester (or 4 quarter) units.
    • Critical Thinking — complete, with a grade of “C-” or higher, a second semester composition or writing course, or a course in reasoning and effective argumentative writing in at least 3 semester (or 4 quarter) units.
    • Mathematical Concepts & Quantitative Reasoning — complete, with a grade of C- or higher,  a mathematics course above the level of intermediate algebra in at least 3 semester (or 4 quarter) units. Mathematics 150, 151, and 252 satisfy this requirement.
  • General Education (GE Courses)-Complete a minimum of 30 units of General Education (which include the Golden Four courses listed above). Courses completed must be at an institution that carries United States regional accreditation.
  • Preparation for the Major
    • At the time of application, students must have completed or have in progress 9 of the following preparation-for-the-major courses:
      • COMPE 160 – Introduction to Computer Programming (3 units; minimum grade of C/2.0)
      • COMPE 260 – Data Structures and Object-Oriented Programming in C++ (3 units; minimum grade of C-/1.7)
      • EE 210 – Circuit Analysis I (3 units; minimum grade of C/2.0)
      • MATH 150 – Calculus I (4 units; minimum grade of C/2.0)
      • MATH 151 – Calculus II (4 units; minimum grade of C/2.0)
      • MATH 254 – Introduction to Linear Algebra (3 units; minimum grade of C-/1.7)
      • PHYS 195 – Principles of Physics (3 units; minimum grade of C/2.0)
      • PHYS 196 – Principles of Physics (3 units; minimum grade of C/2.0)
      • PHYS 196L – Principles of Physics Laboratory (1 unit)
    • The remaining preparation-for-the-major courses below are not required for admission but must be completed before graduation.
      • COMPE 101* – Introduction to Electrical and Computer Engineering (1 unit)
      • MATH 245 – Discrete Mathematics (3 units; minimum grade of C-/1.7)
      • BIOL 100 – General Biology (3 units) or BIOL 101 – World of Animals (3 units)
      • COMPE 270* – Digital Systems (3 units; minimum grade of C-/1.7)
      • COMPE 271* – Computer Organization (3 units; minimum grade of C-/1.7)
      • EE 200* – Analytical Methods for Electrical Engineers (3 units; minimum grade of C/2.0)
    • COMPE 101, COMPE 270, COMPE 271, and EE 200 will be incorporated into the program course schedule and completed as part of the student’s planned course sequence.
  • Applicants must have an overall 2.7+ cumulative GPA
